Best known for his masterpiece of horror, Dracula, Bram Stoker wrote a number of other novels and many short stories, all with supernatural themes or filled with a physical terror reminiscent of Poe. The title story, “Dracula’s Guest,” was originally part of the great novel but was excised and published separately. The accompanying stories, such as “The Squaw,” “The Judge’s House,” and “The Burial of the Rats,” are classic tales of the macabre in their own right. From torture chambers and murderous prophecies to vengeful ghosts, these haunting stories illuminate Stoker’s mastery of horror. (Dublino 1847 - Londra 1912) scrittore irlandese. Critico teatrale, nel 1878 divenne segretario e manager del famoso attore H. Irving, mantenendo queste mansioni fino alla morte di lui (1905). I Ricordi personali di sir Henry Irving (Personal reminiscences of sir Henry Irving), che Stoker pubblicò nel 1906, sono il frutto di questa lunga amicizia e collaborazione. La fama di S. (autore di vari romanzi e novelle) è legata al romanzo Dracula (1897), considerato uno dei grandi classici dell’orrore. Nella vicenda del conte-vampiro, ambientata in una cupa e suggestiva Transilvania (S. studiò accuratamente leggende e folclore transilvanici, e il personaggio di Dracula si ispira a una figura storica, Vlad Dracula o Vlad Tepes, voivoda di Valacchia nel sec.
