Wikipedia BOOKS INCLUDED SECOND VARIETY Synopsis Second Variety is a science fiction short story about self-replicating robots written, by Philip Kindred Dick, an American Author who contributed to science fiction genre of literary world with his works such as The Man in the High Castle, The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, A Scanner Darkly and Second Variety to name a few. This novel is set on the times of nuclear war between West and Soviet Union. The dangers of nuclear war are realized by both sides only after endless loss of human life. While Soviet Union was having an upper hand in the war, key people of UN forces flee to moon base and their engineers develop fighting robots called “Claws”, which can replicate themselves without human insight. Six years passed, the claws destroyed Soviet forces and start redesigns themselves, which even UN forces not aware of it. In the preceding incidents narrate that the “Claws” have powered themselves to the extent which no longer human can control them. In fact the story end lines states that “Claws” started developing weapons to kill other “Claws” 2.

THE VARIABLE MAN Synopsis The Variable Man is a science fiction short story written by Philip Kindred Dick, an American novelist remembered for his science fiction stories such as The Man in the High Castle, Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and A Scanner Darkly. A war is about to break between Centaurian Empire and Terra which is blocked into Centaurian system. Both doing advance researches to destroy the opponent with latest technologies. As they continue to predict the result, actual fight is yet to start. Terra is succeeding in creating a deadly weapon named Icarus, which can travel faster than light and destroy the entire Centaurian Empire. While they are about fire, it is not working. In an accidental research they could bring a man from the past the variable man Thomas Cole. Terra believes he can support them in fixing Icarus, as he is a man of past and has certain genius in him. Finally the variable man fixes Icarus and it was fired. In contrast to the expectations, it exploded and caused severe damages to Terra, though the unpredictable also happened. It travelled faster than light, thus travel beyond the Centaurian Empire's perimeter and Terra is now no more part of the tine system of Centaurian, thus no need of war. THE DEFENDERS Synopsis The Defenders is a short story written by American science fiction novelist Philip K. Dick, who later expanded this as a novel. The Defenders narrates how the war robots deviate from the very purpose of their creation and change the war hungry humans to move towards peace. Nuclear war is fought between United States and the Soviet Union for the past eight years. Both countries create giant bunkers underground and sheltered inside safely, while the fighting continued in the destroyed surface with the help of “leadys”, which are radioactivity-immune robots.
