A young man named Joseph Smith claimed to have had a vision of God and Jesus Christ, who instructed him to restore the true church. Smith translated the Book of Mormon, which he said was a record of ancient American prophets. This book became the foundational text for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, commonly known as the Mormon Church. Joseph Smith's teachings quickly gained followers, many of whom believed in his divine mission. Despite early opposition, Smith and his followers established a thriving community, promoting values of family, work, and religious devotion. However, as the movement grew, so did tensions with non-Mormon neighbors. The Mormons’ growing influence in local politics and their distinct religious practices caused fear and hostility among nearby residents. The first significant persecution the Mormons faced occurred in Missouri in the early 1830s. The tensions escalated when a group of anti-Mormon settlers attacked the Mormon community in Jackson County, forcing them to leave. Smith and his followers moved to the neighboring county of Caldwell, where they were promised protection, but their troubles continued. In 1838, violence erupted again, and the Missouri governor issued an infamous order to expel the Mormons from the state.
