Attivista e scrittore nigeriano di etnia yoruba, educato in Nigeria e in Inghilterra. Esordì nel 1960 con l’opera teatrale Danza della foresta (A dance of the forests) e continuò poi nella produzione di drammi in cui la tradizione yoruba e l’antico uso delle maschere si mescolano alle influenze occidentali, dalla tragedia greca a Shakespeare e oltre: Il leone e la perla (The lion and the jewel, 1963), La strada (The road, 1965), La morte e il cavaliere del re (Death and the king’s horseman, 1975), Un dramma di giganti (A play of giants, 1984), Da Zia, con amore (From Zia, with love, 1992), Re Baabu.
