Successor to the only veterinary practice in the farming community of Devondale, he's losing customers more quickly than he ever believed. Apparently, his former clients simply haven't taken to the practice's youngest — and quietest — veterinarian as the only choice for treating their pets and livestock. Quiet, reticent, and sometimes gruff, he's not a friendly natterer like his beloved former business partner Issa, even though he has the much-acclaimed instincts and veterinary genius of his father, the much reputed 'Old Mac' at the clinic. To make matters worse, his office manager has informed him of new competition — skilled, charming, and attractive Yorkshire veterinarian Doctor Jo Ivey has recently moved to the neighboring village, hanging a shingle and drawing in his clientele with her lively personality and sympathetic nature. At first meeting, Mac discovers all the reasons she's rousting him in the department of human connection — sparks are certainly flying, but not in a good way by the end, between Mac's biting humor and Jo's quick-witted replies. He can't deny that there's something about her, however — nor the fact that she's his equal when it comes to animal care. After a humiliating episode on a local farm in which another longstanding client tells Mac he's joined the new vet's client list, Mac fears his surgery is doomed. In desperation, he allows a local beekeeper to persuade him to investigate the mysterious malady plaguing one of his favorite hives. Despite Mac's persistence, however, the case soon turns into a challenge which tests the limits of his dedication. But when disaster strikes a former client's farm, Mac is in the right place at the right time. In an emergency bid, he and his new rival come together to save an animal's life. As they deal with this moment of crisis, both find an appreciation for what they share, not only the differences between. Could it be that they'll discover that — possibly — there's something to the old adage that opposites belong together?
