This collection brings together the poems Ted Hughes wrote for children throughout his life. They are arranged by volume, beginning with those for reading aloud to the very young, progressing to the poems in Under the North Star and What is the Truth? and ending with Season Songs, which Hughes remarked was written 'within hearing' of children. Raymond Briggs brings to the collection two hundred original drawings that capture the wit, gentleness and humanity of these poems and make this a book any reader - child and adult - will return to again and again.

Edward James Hughes, meglio conosciuto come Ted Hughes, è stato un poeta inglese. Fu soprattutto un intenso interprete della natura. Il suo veemente discorso, fra i più rilevanti della recente poesia inglese, è centrato sulla crudele lotta dell’uomo per l’esistenza: Lo sparviero nella pioggia (The hawk in the rain, 1957, nt), Lupercale (Lupercal, 1960, nt), Poesie animali (Animal poems, 1967, nt), Wodwo (1968, nt). Nel 1977 pubblicò Gaudete, forse il suo capolavoro, cui hanno tenuto dietro altre raccolte: Il fiume (The river, 1983, nt), Osservando i lupi (Wolfwatching, 1989, nt). Fu anche autore di drammi radiofonici e di racconti per l’infanzia.
