Storico statunitense. È Sidney Hellman Ehrman Professor di Storia presso la University of California, a Berkeley. È un rinomato intellettuale, e le sue ricerche hanno aperto ponti fra la storiografia e altri ambiti accademici.Insigne studioso del pensiero del Novecento ("Downcast Eyes. The Denigration of Vision in Twenthieh-Century French Thought", 1993; "Force Fields. Between Intellectual History and Cultural Critique", 1993, "Songs of Experience. Modern American and European Variations on a Universal Theme", 2004; "Essays from the Edge.
