Stephanie Barron, nata a Birghamton, New York, nel 1963, si è laureata in Storia dell'Europa a Princeton. Terminato il dottorato in storia a Stanford, è entrata nelle file della CIA, dove ha lavorato per quattro anni in qualità di Intelligence Analyst per l'unità antiterrorismo. Ha scritto il suo primo libro nel 1992 e ha lasciato la CIA l'anno seguente.
