Professore alla Princeton University.Formatosi ad Oxford, Brown è stato per diversi anni lecturer e poi reader di Storia tardo-romana e bizantina della prestigiosa università britannica. Divenuto professore nel 1975 di "History and Classics" al Royal College dell'Università di Londra, tre anni più tardi era chiamato ad insegnare negli Stati Uniti, prima a Berkeley e infine a Princeton.Viene unanimemente considerato uno dei massimi storici di scuola anglo-americana.
