Oltre 35 anni dopo la sua leggendaria prima registrazione dell’Oratorio di Natale di Johann Sebastian Bach del 1987 per ARCHIV, Sir John Eliot Gardiner ha realizzato una nuova incisione dal vivo di questo capolavoro alla guida dei suoi ensemble, il Monteverdi Choir e gli English Baroque Soloists, presso l'Academy of St. Martin in the Fields a Londra in due sere nel dicembre 2022 definite dal Times “un trionfo assoluto”. L’elegante confezione deluxe contiene 2 CD e un Blu-Ray Audio.

Compositore tedesco.La vita: da Weimar, a Cöthen, a Lipsia. Figlio di un violinista, ricevette la prima istruzione musicale dal padre e, dopo la sua morte (1695), dal fratello maggiore. Nel 1700 entrò a far parte, come soprano, del coro di S. Michele a Lüneburg, rimanendo al servizio di quella chiesa anche dopo la muta della voce, avvenuta l'anno seguente. Nel 1703 ebbe un breve incarico a Weimar come violinista nell'orchestra ducale; pochi mesi dopo divenne organista di chiesa ad Arnstadt. Nel 1707, colpito da dure critiche perché si era assentato senza permesso e perché sottoponeva a eccessive elaborazioni l'accompagnamento dei corali, si trasferì a Mühlhausen, presso la chiesa di S. Biagio. Nello stesso anno sposò sua cugina. Nel 1708 tornò a Weimar come organista di corte. Deluso nella...

Direttore d'orchestra inglese. Allievo di Th. Dart a Londra e di N. Boulanger a Parigi, ha fondato nel 1964 a Cambridge il Monteverdi Choir, specializzato nell'esecuzione di musiche da Monteverdi a Händel, a cui ha affiancato nel 1968 la Monteverdi Orchestra. Nello stesso tempo si è affermato come un'autorità nella riscoperta del teatro operistico dei secc. xvii e xviii con realizzazioni in scena e in disco di opere di M.A. Charpentier, Händel, Rameau, Gluck. Nel 1989 e nel '90 ha iniziato l'incisione discografica rispettivamente di un ciclo di opere di Mozart e di Gluck con strumenti d'epoca.
