Compositore norvegese. Allievo dapprima della madre, studiò poi a Lipsia, dove entrò in contatto con il romanticismo tedesco; in seguito fu, a Copenaghen, allievo di N.V. Gade, allora il maggior esponente del nazionalismo musicale nordico. Cominciò così a interessarsi profondamente del patrimonio folclorico della sua terra, dando vita, con altri giovani musicisti danesi, alla società Euterpe per la diffusione della musica scandinava. In seguito si dedicò a un'intensa attività di pianista e direttore d'orchestra, viaggiando in tutti i paesi scandinavi, in Germania, in Italia, in Inghilterra. G. espresse la sua vena migliore nella vasta serie di brevi composizioni per pianoforte compresi nei dieci quaderni dei Pezzi lirici (composti fra il 1867 e il 1901), nonché in varie raccolte di danze e...
