The book presents the times of decadence of the English nobility and consequently of its service personnel, delving into the theme of the story of a failed love sacrificed on the altar of professional dignity. It is not an easy book, but it is absolutely worth it.
The Remains of the Day
'After all what can we ever gain in forever looking back and blaming ourselves if our lives have not turned out quite as we might have wished?' In the summer of 1956, Stevens, the ageing butler of Darlington Hall, embarks on a leisurely holiday that will take him deep into the English countryside and into his past... A contemporary classic, The Remains of the Day is Kazuo Ishiguro's beautiful and haunting evocation of life between the wars in a Great English House, of lost causes and lost love. The Remains of the Day is now available as a Faber Modern Classics edition.

Ludovica_Costa 27 gennaio 2023A voyage towards self-discovery
I've only recently finished reading the beautiful "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro, and I'd say that amongst the many themes, the one that stuck with me the most was the waxing and waning of time and life, as if both were a tide that ceaselessly encompasses the existence of every human being. This beautiful, melancholy book has made me reflect on the frailty of human bonds, on how little it takes for some misplaced words or gestures to cause misunderstandings, which are subsequently poised to hinder a relationship... or sometimes - paradoxically - even strengthen it. Ishiguro's masterpiece is lyrical and delicate, albeit being the powerful tale of a man's life; and what is to be considered more complex and multifaceted than the very existence of a human soul?
