Rex Stewart

1907, Filadelfia

Cornettista statunitense di jazz. Ispirato da Louis Amstrong, dopo aver suonato con le orchestre di Fletcher Henderson e dei McKinney's Cotton Pickers, fu pressoché ininterrottamente dal 1934 al '45 una colonna dell'orchestra di Duke Ellington. In seguito diresse anche una propria orchestra. Una particolare tecnica esecutiva, consistente nel premere solo a metà i pistoni dello strumento («half valve» o «note strangolate»), gli consentiva inconsueti effetti sonori. Esercitò anche attività saggistica, riunendo vari articoli in Jazz Masters of the Thirties (1972).
