Simbi and the Satyr of the Dark Jungle is the fabulous tale of Simbi, a rich and beautiful girl with a wonderful singing voice. She tires of her comfortable lifestyle, and decides that she must come to know poverty and punishment. The story tells, with terrifying imagination and comic invention, of how she achieves this experience and how, in the end, she escapes from it. Amos Tutuola was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, in 1920. His first novel, The Palm-Wine Drinkard, was acquired by T. S. Eliot and published by Faber in 1952.

Amos Tutuola è uno scrittore nigeriano di cultura yoruba. Autodidatta, in epoca ancora coloniale pubblicò Il bevitore di vino di palma (The palm-wine drinkard, 1952), che sorprese per il vigore fantastico e l’originalità narrativa. Seguirono La mia vita nel bosco degli spiriti (My life in the bush of ghosts, 1954), e poi via via, fra gli altri, Simbi e il satiro della giungla oscura (Simbi and the satyr of the dark jungle, 1955), La coraggiosa cacciatrice africana (The brave african huntress, 1958), La strega erborista della città remota (The witch-herbalist of the remote town, 1981), Povero, baruffone e malandrino (Pauper, brawler and slanderer, 1987).
