This audiobook is narrated by a digital voice. In The Anxious Generation, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the alarming rise of mental health issues among adolescents, particularly since the early 2010s. Rates of depression, anxiety, self-harm, and suicide have more than doubled, and Haidt examines the reasons behind this sharp decline in adolescent well-being. Through a detailed analysis, he reveals how the shift from a “play-based childhood” to a “phone-based childhood” has played a central role in this crisis. Haidt traces this transformation back to the 1980s, when the freedom and independence children once enjoyed began to shrink, leading to a new era dominated by digital technology. By the early 2010s, smartphones and social media had reshaped childhood into one dominated by screens rather than play. Haidt outlines over a dozen mechanisms through which this change has affected children’s social and neurological development, from sleep deprivation and fragmented attention to addiction, loneliness, and social comparison. He highlights how these shifts have been particularly damaging to girls, who are more vulnerable to the pressures of social media, and how boys have retreated from the real world into the virtual world, with troubling consequences. Most importantly, Haidt offers a clear call to action, diagnosing the “collective action problems” that have exacerbated the crisis and proposing four simple rules that could begin to reverse the damage. These rules offer practical steps for parents, teachers, schools, tech companies, and governments to take in order to address the epidemic of teen mental illness and restore a more humane and balanced childhood. Haidt, known for his data-driven approach to difficult societal issues, argues that the mental health crisis among Generation Z must be addressed urgently, as it not only threatens their future but the well-being of society as a whole.
