nato negli Stati Uniti ed espatriato in Inghilterra, maestro del fantastico, fu al di fuori di qualunque tradizione letteraria. Prima illustratore, poi scrittore di romanzi per adulti e per bambini, raggiunse la fama con il popolarissimo Il topo e suo figlio. È morto a Londra nel 2011.
