VOICE BENEATH THE ASHES is a survivor's testimony about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda, told in the voice of a survivor—a teacher named François who lost his wife, his son, and everything that had made up his life. The third part of the book—"Silence"—is the most piercing. It is an account of how people live after hell. Of ashes that never cool.
