Accountability

Four blocks. Milk and bread. 'Watch your sister.' Wren Calloway is sixteen when her nine-year-old sister, Lila, disappears on the walk home from the corner store. Wren was supposed to walk with her. Instead, she stayed a few minutes too long — and Lila never made it home. Their father is already dead. Their mother, June, had fought her way to six years sober, but no amount of sobriety can carry a family through a loss like this. As the search fades and the years pass, Wren's guilt hardens into a life built around one unfinished duty: keep looking. Eleven years later, Wren is taken from a parking lot and wakes chained in a room beneath a house on Larkspur Road. Her captor is an ordinary man — a school-district maintenance worker with keys, routines, and a face no one would look at twice. Then Wren sees the bottle caps. Lila collected bottle caps. He took her sister. And he has no idea who she is. When Wren gets free, she does not run. She locks the door from the other side, puts a recorder on the floor, and gives him the only instruction that matters: 'Say her name. Say what you did.' For one year, through winter, spring, summer, and autumn, Wren demands the truth in his own voice — every evasion stripped away, every comfortable lie refused. But a confession is not the same thing as healing, and forcing a man to face what he did cannot return the girl who was taken. The longer the year lasts, the harder it becomes for Wren to tell where accountability ends and revenge begins. Accountability is a raw psychological horror-thriller about a missing sister, a mother's relapse, survivor's guilt, and the terrible cost of making a man finally tell the truth. For adult readers.
