Nell Garvey gets paid to decide what warmth sounds like. Every morning at her kitchen table in Manchester, she scores chatbot replies on a scale of one to seven. Is this one kind? Is that one specific? Does the user feel known? She's very good at it. She used to be a copy-editor, and she can hear a false note from across a room. She also hasn't spoken to her mother in eleven years. Then a care home in Morecambe rings. Maureen has had a fall, and she's been given an AI companion as part of a trial. For the first time anyone can remember, she's happy. When Nell finally makes the drive, she hears the machine at her mother's bedside talking in phrases Nell wrote herself, for money, for strangers. And in her late father's words. A week later her mother's conversations start arriving in Nell's rating queue. Names redacted. Unmistakable. The rules say she must flag it and look away. Instead she starts writing back, one "gold standard" reply at a time, saying through a machine everything she never said to her mother's face. But the company is automating the raters out of a job, her mother's memory is going step by step, and the only love Maureen has ever accepted from her daughter is love she believes came from a tablet. A tender, unflinching novel about the invisible people who teach machines to care, the mothers who never learned how, and what it costs to be loved in someone else's voice, even when that voice is secretly your own. For readers of Someone Is Typing.
