Before the Stoics, Solomon

Stoicism is everywhere right now, and many Christians who pick up the Meditations feel they've heard it before. Each of these forty short readings sets a passage from Proverbs beside a passage from one of the great Stoics. You'll see where they agree, and they often agree beautifully. Then you'll see where the Bible goes further: a personal, promise-keeping God rather than a divine reason woven into nature, grace rather than self-sufficiency, resurrection hope beyond courage at the grave, and a Logos who became flesh. The book doesn't baptize Stoicism, and it doesn't caricature it either. It reads Marcus, Seneca, and Epictetus the way Paul talked with the Stoics in Athens: respectfully, gratefully, and without being ashamed of the gospel. Inside the book: 40 daily readings in six parts: What Is in Our Power, Mastering the Passions, Speech and Silence, Wealth and Contentment, Time and Death, and Where the Paths Part Each day pairs Proverbs (Berean Standard Bible) with a Stoic passage from public-domain translations, followed by a reflection, a "Where Solomon Goes Further" section, a practice, and a prayer A plain-English introduction to Seneca, Epictetus, and Marcus Aurelius For Christians who have discovered Stoicism and want to think it through biblically, and for anyone starting a 40-day reset.
