The blind man's bend
In a forgotten Transylvanian village, the abandoned mine still holds what the state left behind. Vasile Munteanu returns every morning to the locked gate, as if the old shift never ended. His wife Elena, a former teacher, keeps a private register of the empty houses and the people who no longer live in them. Their son Radu has come back from Italy with a limp and a hunger for something larger than tins and flour. Their daughter Ioana watches everything and photographs what the others prefer to leave unsaid. When hunger pushes them past the padlock and into the galleries, they find more than coal. A thin vein of gold waits beyond the second bend—enough to change everything, and enough to destroy them. As the village begins to notice, as old colleagues recognize the hand behind the disappearances, and as the mayor starts counting what is missing, the family must decide how much they are willing to take, and how much they can still hide. The Blind Man's Bend is a stark, cinematic novel about hunger, memory, and the thin line between survival and theft in a place the world has already abandoned.
