Bread and Scrape - What Britain's Working Poor Ate
Four and a quarter pounds of bread a day. That's roughly what it took to keep one adult fed in 1899 Britain — and it explains almost everything else on the table. While popular history serves up roast joints and groaning Victorian sideboards, most of the country was eating something else entirely: bread and a scrape of dripping, tea stewed twice to make it stretch, meat that showed up once or twice a week if you were lucky. Bread and Scrape reconstructs what working people actually ate at the turn of the twentieth century — miners, mill hands, farm labourers, dockers — using the household budget surveys, government inquiries, and contemporary records that tell the real story behind the myth. It explains why bread dominated every meal, why a single fire and no refrigerator shaped the whole week's cooking, and why — counterintuitively — some of the poorest-paid rural families ate better than higher-earning city workers. This isn't a story of simple deprivation or lost wholesome simplicity. It's a story of genuine skill operating under genuine constraint — and of a diet that sat at the exact hinge point where the British state began, however reluctantly, to take responsibility for what was on its working population's plate. Read it, and you'll never look at a Victorian dinner scene the same way again.
