Trombettista statunitense di jazz. Dal '45 al '48 suonò con Charlie Parker, al cui stile contrappose un proprio solismo lirico e riflessivo, più parsimonioso di note; nel '48-49 si avvicinò al cool jazz (incisioni con Lee Konitz, Gerry Mulligan ecc.), distinguendosene per una più incisiva vena ritmica e pudicamente blues. Queste qualità, unite a un suono essenziale e lancinante, emersero più chiaramente negli anni successivi, durante i quali D. poté essere considerato il più originale musicista jazz fra l'esperienza bop e lo hard bop. Con lo storico quintetto fondato nel '55 (comprendente John Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, e Philly Joe Jones) e con il gruppo del '58-60, sempre con Coltrane, D. utilizzò scale modali (assorbendo...

Propr. Ian Ernest Gilmore Green. Pianista, arrangiatore e direttore d'orchestra jazz canadese. Diede un fondamentale contributo d'originalità, dal 1941 al '48, all'orchestra di Claude Thornhill. I suoi raffinati impasti timbrici e la sua suggestiva tavolozza musicale hanno trovato più piena realizzazione in alcuni dischi registrati assieme al trombettista Miles Davis, nel 1949 e '50 con il «nonette» (Birth of the cool) e successivamente, tra 1957 e '60, con un più ampio organico (Miles ahead, Porgy and Bess, Sketches of Spain). Anche con la propria orchestra diede prova di un'indiscutibile genialità.
