Craftsmanship
Two blades are born: one in the quiet workshops of Earth, where Tanaka's hands move through sixteen foldings of steel; another in the volcanic forges of the Klingon Empire, where Master Moj'Kar shapes a Bat'leth for Captain Torgh. Each blade carries the soul of its maker—the signature hidden on the tang, the knowledge encoded in the grain. At Starbase 137, Administrator Vex defends the Federation's age of plenty: no famine, no drudgery, no need for hands when replicators suffice. But Sulu—who keeps a tokonoma alcove of katana in his quarters—and Torgh—who bears honour scars and a weapon he did not name—understand differently. What begins as philosophical debate becomes something older: a demonstration. Not combat, but testimony. On the training bay, steel meets steel in a conversation between masters. First blood falls on both sides. And in the silence afterward, even Vex must confront the question no replicator can answer: What survives when the work itself becomes obsolete?
