Dagger and Cinder
She reads the dead world. He runs the living one. Neither will walk away the same. The world broke twenty-two years ago. What's left is called the Ashlands — a thousand miles of cracked ground, poisoned air, and the bones of everything the old world promised and failed to deliver. The people who survived split into two kinds: those who control what little is left, and those who are controlled by it. Rick Morrow is neither. She is the most wanted cartographer alive — a ghost who has spent three years stealing maps the ruling Warden Councils have declared illegal, pulling old-world knowledge from sealed archives, and building something no one has asked her to build. She works alone. She trusts no one. She has very good reasons for both. Then she walks into a trap so perfectly set that she actually laughs. Ren Ashvault controls the last working water grid in the Eastern Ashlands. On the surface, he is the Councils' most feared enforcer — the man factions don't argue with, they surrender to. Underneath that, he is something more dangerous: a man who has known for years that the system he serves is rotten, and has kept serving it anyway. He tells himself it's because the alternative is worse. When he opens Rick's stolen map case and finds something that should not exist, he makes the worst decision of his career. He doesn't execute her. He doesn't hand her over. He makes her an offer. She tells him exactly where he can put it. He gives her until morning to reconsider. She spends the night not escaping — negotiating. By dawn, they have a deal neither of them wanted: her maps for his protection, her knowledge of the dead world for his authority in the living one. A forced alliance between two people who are very good at surviving and very bad at trusting. What follows is three weeks across the most dangerous ground in the Ashlands — dead zones, rebel convoys, sealed corridors, and the slow, unwanted discovery that the enemy is far more complicated than the wasteland made him out to be. The closer they get to what the map promises, the more the real secret takes shape: the scarcity that has kept the Ashlands under the Councils' heel was never real. It was built. And someone inside the power structure has been running a game neither Rick nor Ren knew they were in. Their alliance was never supposed to last. The map was never supposed to change anything. They were never supposed to matter to each other. The Ashlands have a way of making liars out of people.
