The Deletion

The Deletion What if the only way to save your daughter... was to forget your son? Ronald Gere has built a career on one belief: nothing ever really disappears. It only gets harder to find. People hire him because he's the one who finds it. Then, on an ordinary Tuesday morning, he picks up his phone and his lock screen photo is gone. It was his twelve-year-old daughter, Lena, caught mid-laugh in a wicker chair. He checks the backup, and there's nothing there. He checks the photo sequence, and there's no gap where it used to be. Whatever took it left no mark. He asks his wife about it, and she looks at him as if he's speaking a language she used to know. He asks Lena, and she just shrugs. His own kid doesn't recognize her face, or the joke she's been telling since she was two. Something is moving through the city, and it's patient. It doesn't stop at deleting records. It deletes the proof that anything happened: the chair your father sat in every Sunday, the toothbrush in the glass, the drawing taped to the wall, the memory in your own head. It doesn't kill anyone. It makes them stop having been. And it's already in Ronald's house. His one ally is a woman who is sixty percent erased herself, with a hand that shows up in photographs as nothing but a blur. Together they have to find out what's behind a machine built to "correct" reality by removing anyone the world can't agree ever existed. It has been running for years, and it's very good at its work. There's a hole in the records, a death certificate with no name to attach to it. The machine hates a loose end, and it has found the nearest fit. His daughter. This is a thriller about memory, grief, and what it costs to be forgotten. It will stay with readers of The Memory Police and fans of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and with anyone who has ever lain awake wondering whether, if nobody remembers you, you were ever really here. "A gap is evidence. A gap says somebody was here. " "It isn't a kindness to take a person's grief away. It's only taking the person." "Nothing disappears. It only gets harder to find." Some books you read. This one reads you back.
