Compositore tedesco. Figlio di un pastore evangelico, in campo musicale fu prevalentemente un autodidatta, ma ebbe modo di verificare le proprie cognizioni musicali e di prendere diretta cognizione di tutti gli stili (in particolare di quello italiano) a Hildesheim (dove trovò un protettore nel rettore del ginnasio), a Braunschweig e ad Hannover. Trasferitosi a Lipsia nel 1701 come studente in giurisprudenza, l'anno seguente fondò un Collegium musicum che contribuì notevolmente allo sviluppo culturale della città, collaborando attivamente con Johann Kuhnau, Cantor della Thomaskirche. Organista della Neue Kirche nel 1704, l'anno dopo si stabilì a Sorau, maestro di cappella in quella corte, poi (1708) ad Eisenach, patria di Johann Sebastian Bach col quale fu in rapporti di amicizia (gli tenne...
