Questo nuovo album del capolavoro corale-orchestrale di Elgar “The Dream of Gerontius” della Huddersfield Choral Society esce in concomitanza con l'uscita del nuovo film “The Choral” - in arrivo anche in Italia - che vede protagonista l'attore Ralph Fiennes nei panni del direttore di una società corale dello Yorkshire. Il film diretto da Nicholas Hytner è ambientato nel 1916 ed è incentrato su un coro dell'Inghilterra settentrionale che si prepara a eseguire “The Dream of Gerontius” nonostante le difficoltà e la perdita di cantanti chiave impegnati sul fronte occidentale. Il capolavoro di Elgar rappresenta così parte integrante della trama del film. L’esecuzione è affidata alla Huddersfield Choral Society che realizzò la prima registrazione dell'opera nel 1945, riscuotendo un enorme successo. Questa nuova incisione è di altissimo livello grazie ad un cast strepitoso composto da Karen Cargill, David Butt Philip e Roland Wood accompagnato dall’Orchestra of Opera North diretta da Martyn Brabbins.

Compositore inglese. Studiò dapprima col padre, organista e commerciante di articoli di musica, completando in seguito la propria formazione da autodidatta. Dopo aver svolto attività orchestrale, come strumentista e direttore, succedette nel 1885 al padre come organista nella chiesa di Saint George di Worcester. Dal 1889 si dedicò interamente alla composizione. Si affermò con l'oratorio Lux Christi (1896), ma la sua fama crebbe rapidamente dopo le esecuzioni, al festival di Birmingham del 1899 e 1900, rispettivamente delle Variazioni sinfoniche op. 36 (14 Variations on an Original Theme: «Enigma»), e dell'oratorio The Dream of Gerontius. La sua abbondante produzione comprende: altri 2 oratori, The Apostles (1903) e The Kingdom (1906); 6 cantate, una quarantina di cori profani a cappella, 4...
