In 1995, the second edition of this reference was named Directory of the Year by the Directory Publishers Association. As part of Europa's "Regional Surveys of the World" series, this edition contains political, economic and social information useful for the understanding of this rapidly changing part of the world. Introductory essays by specialists examine topics which affect the region as a whole. Contributions include: "Political perspectives" by Jonathan Eyal; "Environment" by William Moomaw; and "Economy" by Alan Smith and Philip Hanson. Individual chapters cover the following countries: Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Macedonia, Moldova, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, Uzbekistan and Yugoslavia. Each chapter includes a chronology and essays on recent history and economy, statististical surveys, directory sections with material on the constitution of each country, government, defence and military, political organizations, foreign embassies, judicial systems, religion, the environment, the media, finance, social welfare systems, trade and industry, and transport and tourism. There is coverage on each of the 89 federal units which make up the former USSR.
