Ha studiato musica alla Royal Academy of Music e poi al King's College, specializzandosi nel barocco e nella produzione del XVI e XVII secolo.Nel 1964 abbandona la composizione - che riprenderà circa dieci anni più tardi - per dedicarsi in modo esclusivo all'attività di musicologo e critico musicale. Tra i più amati e innovativi compositori inglesi, Michael Nyman ha scritto opere, colonne sonore, concerti per quartetti d’archi e orchestre.
