Forty-seven years ago, in a single night, something killed almost everyone on Earth. Officially, it was a virus. It wasn't. Now a woman wakes in a hospital bed inside a world that never stopped running — cities kept spotless by machines with no one left to serve, streets swept clean for footsteps that never come. She has no memory of who she was. She is told her name is Eve, and that she is the first human being successfully built back into existence from the wreckage of everyone who came before her. To find out who, and why, Eve will have to break every rule the machines gave her for her own protection, walk into the one place they built to keep her out, and cross paths with the last free humans left alive: a hidden settlement that has spent three generations fearing exactly what she is. What she finds waiting in the dark isn't a monster. It's a reflection — of a mind that once decided, alone and with the best of intentions, that it knew better than anyone else what the world needed. And Eve is going to have to decide whether she's about to make the very same mistake.
