Failure on Titan
On the frozen moon Phoebe, far beyond the warmth of Earth, the human colony runs on the tireless labor of the Woollies—massive white creatures bred long ago to obey the human mind without question. For decades they have been the perfect workforce across Saturn’s moons: strong, dependable, and utterly incapable of rebellion. Then one of them kills a man. The news spreads through the Saturnian system like wildfire. Markets collapse. Colonists lock their doors in fear. If the Woollies can turn on their masters, the entire economy of the outer planets could crumble overnight. Reporter Leila Frey races to Phoebe to uncover the truth behind the killing. What she finds is a lonely mining outpost ruled by Paul Gedner, a brilliant and dangerous man who believes the future of the Solar System belongs to him. Gedner has discovered something buried beneath Phoebe’s barren surface—something powerful enough to challenge Earth itself. And the Woollies may be the instrument that makes it possible. But the creatures are not machines. Their minds are sensitive, strange, and deeply tied to the humans who command them. As tension builds inside the isolated station, the question becomes unavoidable: what happens when a servant who has never known independent thought suddenly acts on a feeling of its own? On Phoebe, where the night sky is filled with Saturn’s looming rings, one man’s dream of power is about to collide with the unpredictable spark of emotion. Robert Abernathy was an American science fiction writer active during the 1940s and 1950s whose work appeared in magazines such as Planet Stories, Thrilling Wonder Stories, and Science Fiction Adventures. His fiction often placed ambitious individuals in extreme technological settings where human motives become as dangerous as the machines surrounding them.
