The story is told from two points of view, that of Elodie Bertolotti, a young cello prodigy aged 20 in Verona, and Angelo Roselli, a 38 year old doctor in Portofino. As the story begins in October 1943, Elodie has just arrived by boat in Portofino, where Angelo rescues her from German Nazis checking papers at the arrival dock. The narrative then goes back in time: 8 years prior for Angelo and 6 months for Elodie to show us how the two got to where they were in the beginning of the book. Angelo has been drafted into the army to serve as a doctor in Ethiopia. His experiences overseas lead to much misery abroad and he is sent home an injured man. Elodie secretly joins the Partisans in Verona after her father has been brutalized by the Facist Blackshirts. Elodie is a gifted cellist with photographic memory and she uses her music to send codes hidden in musical scores to aid the resistance. When Elodie and Angelo meet in Portofino they both have lived through pain, shock and sorrow. The brutality of the Facists and the Nazis was unbelievable. I learned a lot about this period of wartime history. This author has the ability to tell a wonderful story. There is much depth to the characters and the author certainly brought these people to life in the story and captured life in Italy during WW2 in vivid detail. A deeply touching story. Highly recommended. Jean
