Every civilisation has needed a God. Not always a supernatural one, but a system that sees everything, defines right and wrong, and keeps millions of strangers obedient. In God Version 3.0, Maltese author Abner Grech argues that the gods of human history can be read as operating systems for governance: technologies of authority that solved the oldest problem of civilisation, how to make vast numbers of people cooperate, comply and believe. For most of our history, foragers settled their disputes by walking away. Then came farming, surplus and the first cities, and with them God 1.0, the Nature God, whose priests read the sky and claimed to speak for the sun and the storm. When nature became predictable, the system was upgraded to God 2.0, the Ghost God: invisible, all-seeing, and installed inside the conscience, judging every thought and settling every account after death. When that faith faltered, nation, party and market tried to take its place. Now a third system is being installed. God 3.0, the Machine God, asks not for belief but for use. It lives in the cloud, watches through our devices, judges us through scores and rankings, and shapes our choices before we know we have made them. It is the first divine operating system with no gap: its judgement is continuous, its omniscience is real, and exit means leaving social life itself. Drawing on anthropology, history, cognitive science, psychology and political philosophy, from Weber and Durkheim to Arendt, Milgram and Zuboff, the book traces twelve thousand years of governance by gods across nine parts and forty chapters. It shows how each system located authority beyond reach, created a priesthood to mediate it, rewarded obedience and punished deviance, and suppressed the mobile, autonomous psychology that once made our ancestors free. A new Interlude, The Machine That Chooses Who Dies, confronts the most urgent expression of the Machine God: algorithmic targeting and drone warfare, from Gaza and Iran to Ukraine and the Gulf. It examines how scoring systems are now joined to lethal force, how responsibility dissolves when a machine ranks and a human merely approves, and why the promise that automation will remove human error is also a promise to remove the human who could be held to account. Its conclusion is unequivocal: the decision to take a human life must never be delegated to a machine. Inside you will find: A clear framework comparing the Nature God, the Ghost God and the Machine God across nine dimensions, from omniscience and judgement to punishment, reward and control The psychology of authority: why humans crave certainty, defer to experts and trade freedom for order How platforms, credit scores and predictive systems became instruments of governance The battle for the future of AI between corporate concentration, state power and the open-source commons A timeline, a comparative chart and a full glossary of key terms God Version 3.0 is not a book against faith, nor a book against technology. It is a book about power, and about the human tendency to hand our judgement to systems we build and then bow to them. It ends with the question our moment demands: will we submit to God 3.0, resist it, rebuild it on democratic terms, or learn, for the first time, to live without gods at all? For readers of Yuval Noah Harari, Shoshana Zuboff and Karen Armstrong, and for anyone who senses that the algorithm has quietly become the new authority in their life.
