Immigrants in Britain during the Long Nineteenth Century: A Documentary History of Realities and Perceptions: Volume III: Identities
This volume of primary sources examines the ways in which migrants attempted to reconstruct the lives they had left in their homelands, with a focus upon religion and politics. This study also demonstrates the ways in which the original identity evolved both on an individual and collective basis, often as a result of the development of interethnic relationships. The official construction of identities, through the building of places of worship in particular, utilises both publications from individual ethnic groups, as well as impressionistic accounts from newspapers and periodicals, together with social surveys of religious life and personal accounts. Accompanied by introductions and annotations written by the editor, this volume will be of great interest to students of British and World History.
