The Implosion
Taxes, mortgages, pensions, rents and the voice of ordinary citizens all rest on one quiet assumption: that most people work for a living. What happens when they no longer need to? In The Unneeded, Ian Kano showed why AI and robotics may remove the need for much human work, and why the change could arrive in a rush rather than a trickle. The Implosion asks what happens next to everything built on top of wages. When a building implodes, nothing is blown outward. It falls under its own weight once its supports are removed. Modern societies stand on supports like that: wages, taxes on work, and homes bought with wages. AI and robotics don't attack these supports. They make them unnecessary, one sensible business decision at a time. And because the supports are linked, when one fails, the others take the weight. The book draws on real shocks: the British coalfields, East Germany after reunification, Russia in the 1990s, the American foreclosure crisis and the empty office towers of San Francisco. It also uses models calibrated to real national accounts and household surveys. With these, it traces where the damage would go: The empty treasury: why most rich countries could lose 3 to 8 per cent of national income a year in taxes, even as their economies grow The last scarcities: why cheap machines make buildings cheaper but not homes, and why landowners take the gains The rent trap: why support tied to housing ends up with landlords The thirty-year bet: why mortgages lent against wages fail together, and how a crash could hand homes to investors at fire-sale prices The new map of value: what happens to towns, and to the buildings in them, once work no longer holds people in place But collapse is not inevitable. The book sets out three roads out of the rubble. It shows what it would take to reach the one on which citizens own a real share of the machines and the land, and why almost everything that would work is cheap before the threshold and expensive after it. The Implosion is written for anyone who wants to understand the next twenty years, and it is rigorous enough for those who study them. A full technical appendix sets out every model and its evidence. The question is no longer whether the machines will do the work. It is what will be left standing once they do. Book Two of a trilogy. Book One: The Unneeded. Book Three: The Hollow Nation (forthcoming).
