Compositore inglese. Nacque da una famiglia di musicisti e studiò col padre solomon (?, 1618 - Londra 1683), virginalista e compositore. Dal 1694 fu membro della cappella reale e nel 1700 divenne direttore della «King's Music». Compose un gran numero di opere teatrali (fra cui The Rape of Europa, Don Quixote, Acis and Galatea), che acquistarono fama grazie alla freschezza delle melodie, spesso ispirate al canto popolare inglese. Pubblicò 3 volumi di Musica teatrale (1698-1700), due antologie di arie (A Collection of Songs, 1704; Collected Songs, 1710) e altre opere minori.
