The Knowledge Keepers

More than remedies, medicinal plants are teachers. Drawing on science, art, and decades of herbal practice, Dara Saville reveals how plant-human relationships can inspire resilience, healing, and hope in a changing world. In The Knowledge Keepers: Plant Wisdom for a Changing World, herbalist and geo-humanities scholar Dara Saville invites us to see medicinal plants not only as remedies but as teachers, companions, and guides. Drawing on plant science, environmental humanities, herbal practice, community research, and the arts, she explores how relationships with plants can nurture resilience, reciprocity, imagination, and a deeper sense of belonging. Through stories, case studies, and creative reflections Saville considers what medicinal plants can teach us about mutual care, community healing, multispecies life, and the well-being of people and land. Its literary and arts-based materia medica features plants such as roses, marigolds, cottonwoods, datura, prickly pear, rosemary, and yarrow. Essays, poetry, photography, visual art, and storytelling by contributors of Acoma, Tiwa, Diné, Chicanx, Nahuatl, and other backgrounds reveal the many ways people turn to plants for knowledge, inspiration, and care. Both practical and visionary, The Knowledge Keepers asks us to rethink the divide between humans and the natural world and to listen more closely to the botanical wisdom that can guide us through profound environmental change.
