Last Breath

Africa changed the way I see life. I went to Africa because I wanted to become a ranger. I wanted to experience the real bush — the animals, the people, the danger and the life that comes with it. What I found was much more than an adventure. I saw the beauty of Africa, but I also saw what is happening to its wildlife. I met rangers who spend their days and nights protecting animals, often with very little equipment and very little recognition. I saw fear. I saw exhaustion. I saw animals that did not make it. But I also found friendship, discipline, brotherhood and a reason to keep going. LAST BREATH is not only my story. Throughout the book, I also share the stories of three other rangers whose lives became connected to mine — a young woman who chose the ranger life, an American ranger, and a ranger from Congo. Their stories are different from mine, but they all show another side of what it means to live and work in this world. The book takes you from ranger training and survival in South Africa to real experiences in the African bush, and later to further training and a journey deep into the Congo jungle. Along the way, there are difficult moments, dangerous situations, mistakes, friendships and lessons that I could never have learned from a classroom. This is not a story about being a hero. It is about being there. About walking into the bush knowing that something can go wrong. About learning from your mistakes. About respecting the animals and the people around you. And about understanding what the people protecting Africa's wildlife really go through. When I started writing this book, I thought I was simply putting my memories on paper. But the more I wrote, the more I remembered the people. The rangers. The quiet heroes. And I realized that I didn't want the story to end with the last page. I wanted the book to become a way of helping them. That is how THE LAST BREATH became more than a book. It became a cause. Africa became my second home. And the more I saw, the more I understood that some things are worth fighting for. One man. One mission. For wildlife. For Africa.
