Nasce a Sarajevo e nel 1992 si trasferisce a Chicago. Scrive su varie testate tra cui The New Yorker, Granta e The Paris Review. Tra i libri pubblicati in Italia ricordiamo Spie di Dio (Einaudi 2000), Nowhere Man (Einaudi 2004), Il progetto Lazarus (Einaudi 2010) finalista al National Book Award, Il libro delle mie vite (Einaudi 2013) e Amore e ostacoli (Einaudi 2014).
