È stato ammesso alla Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, alla Songwriters Hall of Fame e alla New Jersey Hall of Fame. Vincitore di venti Grammy Awards e di un Oscar, ha ricevuto il Kennedy Center Honors. Vive nel New Jersey con la sua famiglia. Nel 2021 ha scritto con Barack Obama RENEGADES. Born in the USA (Garzanti 2021).
