Nielsen’s Maskarade is regarded as Denmark’s national opera. It combines folk-song character, Mozartean elegance and virtuoso surprises to create what conductor Titus Engel describes as ‘musical comedy that’s both witty and of the highest calibre’. Based on an 18thcentury play by Ludvig Holberg, the story revolves around Leander and Leonora who meet at a masquerade ball, swear undying love, and then have to deal with the complicated consequences of their situation, all accompanied by Nielsen’s irresistibly sparkling score. This acclaimed contemporary staging from Oper Frankfurt is sung in a new German translation and directed by Tobias Kratzer.

Compositore danese. Fu violinista dell'orchestra di corte, direttore d'orchestra al Teatro reale, insegnante e quindi direttore del conservatorio di Copenaghen. Accanto a Gade e Grieg è considerato uno dei maggiori rappresentanti della musica scandinava. Come i suoi predecessori danesi e norvegesi, si rifece al clima espressivo della tradizione popolare, raggiungendo infine un linguaggio personale, saldamente ancorato alla tonalità, ma attento agli apporti delle correnti moderne, specie dell'impressionismo. Pur avendo composto due opere di teatro (Saul e Davide e Mascherata), diede il meglio di sé nella produzione per orchestra: in particolare nelle 6 sinfonie, composte tra il 1892 e il 1925 (di cui ricordiamo la seconda I quattro temperamenti, la terza Sinfonia espansiva, la quarta, e maggiormente...
