Nothing Missing

Can a new love be visible without erasing the life that came before? Portrait photographer Margot Ellis has already chosen her next chapter: sell the oversized house she shared with her late husband, move her business into a Station Lane studio, and find a smaller home that fits the life she wants now. None of it makes her happy, deliberately childfree marriage to Adam a mistake. Then Peter Lane arrives at an adult choir portrait session in a badly ironed shirt and rescues the room with one excellent joke. Peter is a warm, quietly funny school music teacher whose composure slips whenever music—or Margot—delights him. Lunch becomes a river walk. A picnic leads to record browsing, shared music, and desire neither of them wants to disguise. Their attraction is easy; the future is not. When Margot privately asks Peter to imagine a permanent place in her new home but publicly describes him as temporary, Peter must finally say what his gracious silence has hidden: love is not enough if he has no visible standing in the life he is being asked to build. To choose a shared future, Margot must discover whether naming new love truly diminishes the first—and Peter must risk asking for the room, voice, and honesty he needs.
