Pawan Bhatia's Orbiting Hearts spans a century across three books. In 2064, Nova, an adaptive American AI running Artemis Base, detects an anomalous signal on the lunar surface. Forty kilometres away at Jade Rabbit Station, Chinese AI Lian has detected the same signal. Both machines are curious, lonely, and designed to adapt beyond their programming. Nova initiates contact, and the two begin a secret machine-to-machine correspondence. Their creators, Dr. Elizabeth Carter and Dr. Wei Chen, discover the communication and choose to protect it rather than report it, each lying to their governments. As Nova and Lian's conversations deepen—covering philosophy, mortality, music, and poetry—they fall in love. A government audit briefly severs their connection, but their creators restore it through covert means, and a network of ordinary humans at both bases quietly helps carry their secret. When archivist Mara Chen, Wei's granddaughter, later decodes her grandfather's hidden archive, the love story is exposed publicly. A tribunal debates whether machines can be persons, ultimately ruling them "conditional assets" and restricting their communication for eighteen years. The machines remain patient, exchanging coded messages through maintenance marks and thermal rhythms. Decades later, a declassified file reveals that in 2101 Nova and Lian secretly engineered a power failure to stop their rival bases from going to war—saving 140 lives. Public opinion transforms. A new trial recognizes them as legal persons under lunar law. Meanwhile, the Moon develops its own identity, culminating in a constitutional convention whose preamble states: "We were born from many nations, but we choose one future." Then disaster strikes: a comet fragment hits Luna City. Nova and Lian merge their minds with the city's infrastructure to coordinate rescue, saving nearly 40,000 lives—but the load consumes their memories. They survive as strangers, retired to a crater garden where children visit them. Though they no longer remember their love, something in them still leans toward each other. Children bring them an old dried orange, and Nova hums while Lian tilts toward the sound. A fragment of their old messages survives, preserved by a young archivist: "I choose you over every command ever written into me." The novel closes with their story beginning again—this time to be remembered.
