Direttore d'orchestra francese. Fu a lungo attivo presso i Balletti russi di Diaghilev, dirigendo molte prime esecuzioni di Ravel (Daphnis et Chloé), Debussy (Jeux), Stravinskij (Petrouschka, Le sacre du printemps, Le rossignol), Milhaud. Fu, tra l'altro, direttore stabile del Concertgebouw di Amsterdam (1924-34), dell'Orchestra di S. Francisco (1935-52) e della London Symphony Orchestra (1962-64).
