1883, Bsharri

Kahlil Gibran, saggista, narratore, poeta mistico e artista, nasce a Bisherri, in Libano, nel 1883, figlio di cristiani maroniti. Vive con madre e fratelli a Boston tra 1894 e 1897, rientrato in patria studia letteratura araba a Beirut. Di nuovo a Boston, nel 1904 conosce Mary Haskell, sua benefattrice e futura curatrice delle sue opere. Nel 1908 è a Parigi, dove studia arte, legge Voltaire, Rousseau, Blake e Nietzsche, e pubblica un libro di racconti in arabo, Spiriti ribelli. Stabilitosi a New York nel 1912, si afferma come pittore e poeta, comincia a scrivere in inglese e nel 1918 pubblica Il folle. Fonda nel 1920 un'associazione letteraria siro-libanese per il rinnovamento della conservatrice letteratura araba. Muore a New York nel 1931.Feltrinelli ha pubblicato Il Profeta (1991),...
