Berliner Philharmoniker

Orchestra sinfonica fondata a Berlino nel 1882 dall'impresario Hermann Wolf, che riunì sotto la direzione di Franz Wüller 54 orchestrali provenienti dalla Bilsesche Kapelle. Nel 1884 la formazione assunse il nome attuale e fu affidata alla guida di J. Joachim, quindi, nel 1887, a H. von Bülow. Da quel momento si alternarono sul podio dell'orchestra ospiti d'eccezione: da Brahms a Grieg, Cajkovskij e R. Strauss. Il vasto repertorio e la qualità delle interpretazioni ne sancirono la celebrità, specie sotto la direzione stabile di A. Nikisch (1895-1921) e di W. Furtwängler (1922-45). L'attività concertistica, non interrotta durante gli eventi bellici, proseguì nel dopoguerra con Sergiu Celibidache e nuovamente, dal '48 al '54, con Furtwängler. Simon Rattle (Liverpool 1955), direttore d'orchestra inglese, ha iniziato la sua carriera sul podio della City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra e nel 1999 ha raccolto la pesantissima eredità di Claudio Abbado alla testa dei Berliner Philharmoniker.
