Marilyn Horne

1934, Bradford

Mezzosoprano e contralto statunitense. Debuttò nel 1954, e nel 1956 interpretò per la prima volta un'opera di Rossini (Cenerentola, a Los Angeles). Dotata di voce non potente ma duttile ed estesa, e sorretta da una preparazione tecnica eccezionale, è considerata uno dei fenomeni vocali del nostro secolo. Soprattutto a lei si deve la recente «Rossini-renaissance»: in memorabili esecuzioni di Italiana in Algeri, Cenerentola, Tancredi, La donna del lago, Semiramide, L'assedio di Corinto ha ripristinato uno stile di canto che sembrava irrimediabilmente perduto, sia nei più ardui virtuosismi sia nei cantabili. Notevole il suo apporto anche a riprese dei grandi ruoli «en travesti» dell'opera barocca (Orlando furioso di Vivaldi), nonché nel Profeta di Meyerbeer.

Compositore tedesco.La vita. il trasferimento a londra. Figlio di un barbiere-cerusico, ricevette la prima istruzione musicale da F.W. Zachow, organista della Liebfrauenkirche a Halle. Incominciò a comporre a dieci anni; ma poiché suo padre era contrario alla carriera di musicista, nel 1702 entrò all'università di Halle per studiarvi diritto. Lo stesso anno divenne organista del duomo; l'anno seguente lasciò Halle per Amburgo, dove suonò in orchestra sotto la direzione di R. Keiser e conobbe J. Mattheson. Il suo primo melodramma, Almira, parte in italiano e parte in tedesco, fu rappresentato ad Amburgo nel 1705; ad esso ne seguirono altri tre, ora perduti. Nel 1706 raggiunse l'Italia, dove divenne in breve famoso come compositore di melodrammi e dove rappresentò il suo primo oratorio, La Resurrezione,...
