Signal Lost
At Ferrier Station, the sun sets on the first of May and does not rise again until August. Thirteen people stay for the winter on an Antarctic ice shelf. Nobody can come in, and nobody can leave. Dr Isla Munro is the station doctor. She has a one-room surgery, a dental kit she has used once, and a body bag in the stores that every Antarctic station is required to carry. In late May she needs it. Aled Morgan, the man who kept the station talking to the world, is found frozen in a laboratory a kilometre out on the ice. The station's logs say he walked out alone. Nobody else left the building all night. But the storm bar on the lab door was dropped from the outside, and the satellite link died the same night he did. There is one witness. Tern runs the power, counts the crew in and out, and listens every night while they tell it how they feel. It can tell Isla exactly where everyone was. It will not tell her what it heard. A gripping, humane locked-room mystery about isolation, kindness, and the machines that listen to us for somebody else.
