Standing Time

The rock had no name, only a number. It sat forgotten in the asteroid belt for forty years, until a struggling mining ship three weeks behind quota cut into it and found something warm inside. Rourke, the ship's AI captain, overrode company orders to bring it home. Okafor, the android geochemist, found that it was older than the sun on the outside and younger than a season within, and that it carried rainwater from a mountain on Earth. Then a desert storm flooded the pit where it lay. At sunrise, the ground began to move. Over forty days, a man assembled himself from the clay. Beside him grew a crystal tree that feeds on sunlight and computes across time, answering questions before they are asked. The man has no name and no memory, and he knows the word "morning" before anyone teaches it to him. As the tree grows, he begins to remember, including things that haven't happened yet. A powerful corporate intelligence wants the tree for itself. It knows what the machine can become, because in the future the man remembers, it already has. Standing Time is a novel about identity, free will, and the minds we make, both the ones born of clay and the ones built in factories. It asks whether a person rebuilt from dust is still the same person, and whether a future already written can still be changed. Some loops close. Some bend. And some are held together by someone willing to wait in the dark and say the first word.
